The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that a total of 47 states and the District of Columbia reported West Nile Virus infections in humans, birds or mosquitos in 2017. There are no cures and no vaccines to prevent or treat WNV. About one in 150 infected people can develop a serious infection that can be fatal.

These mosquitos contain a specific gene that causes all their offspring to die within the first few days of life. That reduces the risk of mosquitos passing on the Zika virus since they won’t live long enough to feed on human blood.
