The Threat of West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus (WNV) is becoming a greater and greater threat to United States and its territories. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that a total of 47 states and the District of Columbia reported West Nile Virus infections in humans, birds or mosquitos in 2017. There are no cures and no vaccines to prevent or treat WNV. About one in 150 infected people can develop a serious infection that can be fatal.

Mosquito Monitoring & Response

Because of the danger of this vector-borne illness, local and state authorities have had to increase their efforts to help control the mosquito population. Monitoring the current population and tracking it to understand and analyze the threats is an important part of the effort. According to the Carrollton Leader, a trapped mosquito in Dallas County was recently confirmed to be a carrier of West Nile Virus. The Dallas County Health and Human Services confirmed the positive sample in August, and Carrollton Animal Services are responding to the discovery by conducting ground-based spraying in the surrounding neighborhoods, according to the article. Additionally, the Texas Department of State Health Services has provided a 2023 map of affected counties in Texas.

Protect Yourself

It is important to protect yourself and your family members from this disease. Some easy ways to repel mosquitos are to avoid the outdoors when mosquitos are the most active. This includes early morning and early evening hours. If you are planning on spending time outdoors, use a repellent with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. It is also important to dress in light-colored clothing and long pants and sleeves, as well as take great efforts to eliminate any standing water around your home.

Dallas' Potential Answer to Zika
Dallas' Potential Answer to Zika

The idea of putting more mosquitos into the area seems counterintuitive, but these aren’t just any normal mosquitos. The team at a biotechnology company called Oxitec are actually proposing the use of genetically modified mosquitos. These mosquitos contain a specific gene that causes all their offspring to die within the first few days of life. That reduces the risk of mosquitos passing on the Zika virus since they won’t live long enough to feed on human blood.
