Your Questions About Permanent Christmas Lights, Answered

Let's begin by looking at some of the most common questions we get about permanent lights and what makes them different from standard Christmas lights.

  • What are permanent Christmas lights?

Permanent Christmas lights are lights that are designed to last years at a time, so they don't have to be installed at the beginning of each season and taken down at the end of the season. They are a hassle-free way to easily keep your holiday cheer.

  • Are permanent Christmas lights really permanent?

The short answer is no, permanent Christmas lights are not really permanent in the sense that they can't be used indefinitely. However, permanent Christmas lights generally last between six and 10 years before they need to be replaced, so unlike standard Christmas lights, you should get quite a bit more than one season's worth of use out of them. You may need maintenance or repairs performed earlier than that, although hopefully not before the four-year mark or so.

  • How do permanent Christmas lights work?

For the most part, permanent Christmas lights work like - and look like - standard Christmas lights. However, they are made with aluminum tracks that overhang the lightbulbs. These tracks help shield and protect the bulbs from the elements, allowing them to last through multiple years. To the eye looking at the lights from across the street, there is no difference in what they look like. Your home will still look magical if you use permanent Christmas lights.

  • Should I get permanent Christmas lights?

This is a trickier question to answer because it depends on a few factors. Read the section below to get a better understanding of who is a good candidate for permanent Christmas lights. While they're not necessarily for everyone, they can be a good choice in many instances.

If you have mobility issues and cannot get on a ladder, then permanent lights would be a great option for you. If you live alone and don't want to schedule yearly light help, permanent lights would take that hassle away. If you love one style of lights and don't want to change it up every year, then a signature, permanent look is a great idea for you.

Should You Get Permanent Christmas Lights Installed?

Let's discuss the issue of cost first. Permanent Christmas light installation generally costs more upfront than it would cost you to purchase and hang regular Christmas lights, or to have regular lights professionally installed. However, for most people, this higher cost is worth it because they don't have to take the time and effort to install and take down lights every year, or hire professionals to do it for them. Instead, they can essentially take a set-it-and-forget-it attitude. It's what the ease of the situation costs to you. We pay a premium for services like food and grocery delivery, so this is really another time-saving option you have to decide is worth your money.

If you're planning to live in your home for at least a few more years, the cost per use for your permanent lights will likely justify the higher upfront costs. (And even if you move within the next year or two, built-in Christmas lights can be used as a selling point.)

Businesses and public buildings, like libraries and churches, are also good candidates for permanent Christmas lights, especially since some of these institutions like to keep the holiday lights glowing all year long. If you work at any of these styles of places and have heard grumblings about the lack of Christmas cheer around the place, maybe suggest a permanent Christmas light installation. It would also mean no one else at work has to be designated to hang the lights, and that might persuade everyone right there.
