How to Defend Your Home Against Spiders

September 29, 2017

Spiders are a very clever type of insect. In addition to sneaking their way into just about every corner of a home undetected, these bugs spin delicate webs that you might not even notice until you accidentally brush past one. To make matters worse, some spiders prefer cool, damp environments, while other types of spiders prefer warm, dry areas, so it’s tough to figure out exactly what’s attracting them in the first place.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to defend your home against spiders. Use the following tips to keep these pesky insects at bay:

  • Seal up any cracks or gaps. Spiders like to make their way into your home through small cracks in floorboards or doorways. Little tears or openings in your window screens can also allow spiders in.
  • Remove spider webs. Use a broom or a vacuum cleaner to sweep webs away. Take away their webs (and often, the egg sacs hidden in them), and the spider will more than likely move to another location.
  • Turn lights off at night. Lights attract moths and other insects, many of which are ideal prey for a spider. By deterring other insects from your home, you also deter spiders.
  • Use natural aromas. The smell of citrus peels and peppermint are natural deterrents for spiders. Place the peels or peppermint oil on window sills in a dark attic or other places where spiders like to gather in your home. Replace frequently until the spiders go away.
  • Get help from licensed professionals. While it may be easy to get rid of a handful spiders on your own, a spider infestation is something that requires the knowledge of a pro. If spiders keep coming back even after you try the tips above, call MosquitoNix®.
