Keep Mosquitoes and Other Biting Insects Out of Your Yard

When mosquitoes breed on your property, they can ruin even the most well-planned backyard get-togethers. However, they aren't the only insects you'd be wise to keep away. Many other biting insects, such as black flies and horseflies, can also crash your outdoor party.

In addition to the annoyance they can cause, these pests can also be carriers of diseases such as malaria and the West Nile virus. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep these pests out of your yard and away from your friends and family.

Remove Standing Water

Standing water is an attraction for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying organisms. This can be found in buckets, barrels, birdbaths and more. To keep mosquitoes away, drain these stagnant water sources. It's where they lay their eggs. Any water that has been sitting for about a week can become their breeding ground.

Be sure to keep your property clear of all traces of stagnant water. One of the most overlooked areas that mosquitoes love to breed in is your rain gutters. Be sure to keep them free of clogs so the water can clear out easily.

Trap and Kill Them

Many products on the internet boast results when it comes to removing mosquitoes from your property. Anything from fan traps to UV lures, to electric shock. With so many options to choose from, it can be tough to decide what can work best for your situation.

If you want to repel all types of insects, a common and natural method is to make a hot pepper spray. Just mix jalapeno, chili or cayenne pepper with water to make it. Peppers contain capsaicin, which will make an insect experience a burning sensation.

Grow Plants That Repel Insects

Certain plants can help to repel insects. Many herbs, for example, have strong aromas that mosquitoes and other insects dislike. You can also grow plants that attract hummingbirds. This can help keep mosquitoes out of your yard by drawing them away. Planting marigolds around your property would be another great option for repelling insects. A nice bonus to this is that you'll have pretty flowers to look at growing in your yard.

Use Active Ingredients To Repel Insects

Some active ingredients in sprays and other products can help keep mosquitoes and other insects away from your yard. However, be sure to follow the directions on the product packaging. Some products have restrictions on where they can be used. Other products may only work for a limited time before needing to be re-applied. Make sure you read all of the instructions before using these products.
